Sex and hermaphroditism in the Penna model

چکیده

I compared sexual(SX) and hermaphroditic(HA) reproduction schemes within the Penna model[1]. A fixed set of parameters was used, to make the results comparable with recent simulations[2]. I also reproduced the results for a selfemerging dominance[2] in an independant simulation for both hermaphroditic and sexual cases. A variation on partner selection was also implemented, this shifted stable population sizes slightly. The stable population is considered the most significant result for these comparisons since Stauffer et al.[3] gave strong argument, that from two species competing for the same resources the one with a higher stable population while not competing will prevail, while the other one will die out. The parameters were: Birthrate B = 4, minimum reproduction age R = 8, mutational threshold T = 3, and mutation rate M = 1. Different values for Nmax have been simulated. The starting population was choosen to N(0) = Nmax/100. In order to get better statistics several runs have been made with a different seed value for the random number generator, when computer time was available.

CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mosaic mutation of SRY gene induces hermaphroditism in rabbits

Hermaphroditism is a rare disorder that affects sexual development, resulting in individuals with both male and female sexual organs. Hermaphroditism is caused by anomalies in genes regulating sex determination, gonad development, or expression of hormones and their receptors during embryonic development during sexual differentiation. SRY is a sex-determination gene on the Y chromosome that is ...

Phylogenetic perspectives on the evolution of functional hermaphroditism in teleost fishes.

Hermaphroditism is taxonomically widespread among teleost fishes and takes on many forms including simultaneous, protogynous, and protandrous hermaphroditism, bidirectional sex change, and androdioecy. The proximate mechanisms that influence the timing, incidence, and forms of hermaphroditism in fishes are supported by numerous theoretical and empirical studies on their mating systems and sexua...

Direct reciprocity stabilizes simultaneous hermaphroditism at high mating rates: A model of sex allocation with egg trading.

Simultaneous hermaphroditism is predicted to be unstable at high mating rates given an associated increase in sperm competition. The existence of reciprocal egg trading, which requires both hermaphroditism and high mating rates to evolve, is consequently hard to explain. We show using mathematical models that the presence of a trading economy creates an additional fitness benefit to egg product...

Gonadal dysgenesis

Disorders of sex development (DSD), previously referred to as intersex disorders, comprise a variety of congenital diseases with anomalies of the sex chromosome, the gonads, the reproductive ducts and the genitalia. DSD is loosely classified into four groups on the basis of histological features of the gonadal tissue: XX-DSD with two ovaries (female pseudohermaphroditism), XY-DSD with two testi...

has celebrated. This poetical and transcendental idea has so dominated the lay and scientific mind that even now the question of hermaphroditism in the mammalia is discussed and supported by the description of specimens with alleged ova and spermatozoa in a common sex gland, or of those where the opposite sex-duct element is unduly represented at the expense, we shall see, of the potent normal ...
